yesterday I and my friends put up our sketches and illustrations on Character Animation show gallery, which is going to have its opening on Wednesday. My friend, Sophie did several long vertical paintings with a charming love story that became an inspiration for this one. as i draw and paint, the composition got shorter and shorter. haha. fail

it is quite mind blowing to see everyone's amazing artworks all together. Each section of the wall has strong impression to me, I wonder how other people react to it. now i feel like i should work harder.

so i decided to do painting a day. let's see how far i can go.

first one is oil and it was really bad hahahaha and second time, i used nu-pastel, so drawing was easiler but I messed up ear and nose. hahahahaha long way to go. she had beautiful skin color, but it was hard as much as its beauty.

3 hour study, Oil

It was my first oil painting experience. I often do image training about underpainting but it didn't really work out as i expected with other medium. But oil acts as i imagined so that was fun. I really like this painting class so I will definitely post some more paintings from class in near future . Also, i have no idea how to take picture without reflection on the painting....

it might be for myself, It is pretty interesting to see things on actual painting that I don't see in digital. This is scanned so obvisously you can't really see the dark side of shadow. in actual painting, colored pencils are glossy, so it reflects lights. from certain view, you can't see the lines but from front of the painting, it adds some detail. It's very funnn

After working on several things, I gave myself a little trip to san diego. It was not easy to stop and paint anything I really wanted just because I was too tired walking from A to B. but whenever when I take a ferry or train, I could rest my body little bit so I did four of those. Last one, at the train station, It was too dark to see the color of my pastel, so it looks really weird and different from what I imagined at the spot but
I am uploading anyway. Will do more I promise.

This is just a fan art. Pixar has been promoting upcoming feature film, The brave, in an unconventional way. Basically they have been releasing character designs and still cuts of the movie. It definitely is a refreshing way to keep up the excitement of lots of people since the movie has been issued frequently because of director change and all that. They just released character designs of four characters. And They make me excited to wait a year for this film than cars 2 which comes out tomorrow.

Japanese Tsunami Fundraiser

Calarts Character Animation program held a Japanese Tsunami Fundraiser gallery show. The gallery is hosted by Thanh Dang, who is currently a student of Character Animation BFA1. Although the gallery had to be assembled really quickly in a period when all students are busy for essays and last projects in classes, It seems like everything has been successfully done. I don't really know how much has been raised or anything. Good will with good heart, I guess that's what matters. hmmm

March-April is a big month for everybody..not only for calarts students but most students in general, it is a month when job seekers open eyes wide and...due dates for schools and projects are all packed in april. On March 11, an 8.9 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan near the city of Sendai. The earthquake generated a massive tsunami with waves as high as 30 feet, resulting in floods, fires and the closure of airports and transit systems. Hundreds of people were killed, and homes, fields and towns were flooded or destroyed.

The Give2Asia Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fund is responding to the immediate needs of survivors. Donations will go toward relief efforts, as well as short-term to long-term recovery projects undertaken by the affected communities. We are working with our local advisors based in Tokyo to assess the current situation and to obtain more information on the needs of survivors. Outdoor pastel painting

coloring with limited number of colors feels definitely hard especially with pastel, which is a hard blend color.

although i have a specific color in my mind for specific spot, it's just....not easy to create the color without blending. I like the contrast of smooth blending and dry-brush like chalk texture, but keeping the texture and making a right color seems just impossible. i guess that is the biggest challenge for moving on from acrylic and digital to pastel. I am aware of different process of putting on colors or making decision of colors is quite different from acrylic, maybe there must be a better or smarter way of mixing color.

for the last one, which i liked at the moment when i was painting but now i don't, i had to paint it in dark, so i guess i was just keep putting too vibrant colors. when i came back in the lodge, i notice, i wish i had a portable lights.

Calarts have been preparing for this international collaboration between Chung-Ang University and Calarts over 6 years. I was asked to work on this project as an animator. It is interesting since i can work with actors and dancers along my animation. my job is to support the character and empower the visuality in the play with animation. and...this is a poster that i made for the performance of chung-ang version of King lear and CALANG version of King Lear. they are almost similar but calarts team is only layering different realm of arts on top of Chung-Ang's King Lear so..........the important idea is LAYERINGGG!!!!(which doesn't really seem to be pushed far......sorry..)
